Update on Marie Mason at Carswell

UPDATE ON MARIE MASON (Aug 30, 2010)

We have some updated news on Marie Mason.

First, Mason urgently asks that all supporters STOP sending money directly into her commissary account. Money for her commissary should be sent directly to her mother, Karin Mason, at: PO Box 352, Stanwood, MI 49346. Money sent there is put into her commissary as needed. If you know anyone who may be sending money directly to her commissary, please contact them IMMEDIATELY and ask them to stop doing this.

Second, the lawyers have hold us that the feds have consistently denied that Carswell is a CMU. However, the wing Mason is in is clearly a special control unit, and the conditions there are also very restrictive. At least one other political prisoner is being held there, Helen Woodson.

We are extremely happy to report that Mason’s food situation has improved significantly compared to Waseca prison. She is also no longer held in solitary all the time; as of her last communication, she has been let out occasionally, but has not been released into general circulation in her unit yet.

Mason asks that people hold off sending any books for the time.

The hearing for her appeal for re-sentencing is set for October 19 in Cincinnati. Mason will not be there, but it will be open to the public to attend.

Marie Mason’s case is one of three examples discussed in Peter Gelderloos’s new article “The Decline of Resistance from the Red Scare to the War on Terror”, available on Counterpunch.

Update on Mason in Carswell (Aug 13, 2010)

We have received information that Mason has been held in solitary confinement since she has arrived in Carswell, Texas. But she IS receiving mail, so please keep writing her!

There are different rules at this prison regarding books, so she is asking that supporters hold off sending them at this time.

Mason in Carswell, TX at rumored CMU

Mason is now at the federal prison in Carswell, Texas.

For many years, it has been rumored that this is the location of a third of the previously secret CMUs (Communications Management Units). For more on CMUs, see here.

Please write to Mason:

Mason in Oklahoma City

According to the BOP inmate locator, Marie Mason is at the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City. Although rumors continue to swirl, there is no confirmation at this time as to where Mason will end up.

Please drop Mason a line. If you are writing a longer letter, we recommend you photocopy it, in case she is gone by the time it arrives. This way you can resend it again later.

Mason to be transferred

We’ve received confirmation that Marie Mason has been told that she is being held in solitary confinement because she is being transferred, and not for any punitive measure.

Mason put in solitary confinement

On Thursday (July 1) Marie Mason was placed in solitary confinement. Her cell is very small and windowless, and since then she has only been allowed to stand outside (in a small cage) for under an hour, in total.

She cannot send email and can only make one phone call a week. She has also lost access to the vegan food she was buying from the commissary, and so she has an extremely limited diet.

She has been told that she has been ”re-classified”, although exactly what this means is unclear. They may be preparing to transfer her.

Mason can still send and receive letters. However, she asks that supporters do not send pictures at this time.

If anyone has information about what process is being initiated, please contact us at supportmariemason at gmail. We encourage all supporters to write her and keep her spirits up.

Email alert for Mason

Marie Mason now has email. She asks that if  you are in email contact with her, go to www.corrlinks.com to check for mail.

The email she sends will NOT go to your inbox - you must go to corrlinks.com to retrieve her emails.

Regarding Mason’s vegan diet appeal

Some of Marie Mason’s other supporters have put out a call to contact Bureau of Prisons (BOP) officials to ask them to grant Mason a vegan diet. (After the Waseca warden denied her this, Mason started an appeal process to the regional BOP.) However, we spoke with Mason and she notified us that her appeal process had encountered some difficulties, and so she must repeat two of the steps.

Because of this, there is no need to contact these officials at this time, as her appeal will not be before them.

Mason denied vegan meals

Sadly, we must convey the news that the Waseca warden has denied Marie Mason the right to vegan meals. She has told us that sometimes she goes days without being able to eat anything from the meals served, and must buy all her food from the commissary. However, her commissary funds are penalized to pay restitution.

Mason is currently appealing the Warden’s decision to the regional prison authorities.

We would like to thank everyone who has contacted the Warden’s office on her behalf. If you would like to donate money for her commissary, she asks that you send it directly to the PO Box. Do NOT send it directly to her commissary account.

Write to Marie Mason

We encourage everyone to write to Marie Mason in prison:

Marie Mason #04672-061

FMC Carswell

Federal Medical Center

P.O. Box 27137

Fort Worth, TX 76127

Under no circumstances mention any illegal acts. Letters that mention other Green Scare prisoners may be rejected. Mason has a list of 100 pre-approved people she can write to; if you are not on that list, she will be able to receive your letter but not write back.

Everyone must use their first and last name when writing. All letters must be entirely in English. Be sure to include your return address on the envelope. You should also write her name and prisoner number on each piece of correspondence, as the prison tends to discard the envelope and then may "lose" track of who the letter is going to.

About Marie Mason

Marie Mason is a loving mother of two and a long-time activist in the environmental and labor movements. In March 2008, she was arrested by federal authorities for charges related to two acts of property destruction that occurred in 1999 and 2000; no one was injured in either of them. She accepted a plea bargain and was sentenced on February 5, 2009 to just under 22 years. She is now serving the longest sentence of any "Green Scare" prisoner.

The “Green Scare” is the name given to the recent arrests of animal rights and environmental activists who have been charged with acts of economic sabotage. Federal authorities have sought outrageous sentences (often Life in prison) and have publicly and legally labeled the activists as “terrorists” – despite the fact that no one has been killed or injured in any of the acts.

Supporting Marie Mason does not mean agreeing with the actions that she took -- but it does mean opposing the fear-mongering tactics of the federal government and the outrageous sentences they have imposed.
